In earlier builds of Project Zomboid, firearms relied on a pure "chance to hit" system, whereas the newer overhaul uses a "chance to damage" system in which missed shots still connect and stagger targets without causing actual harm. Some players may prefer the original system due to the updated damage calculations that alter shotgun crowd-control mechanics, making it less likely to eliminate multiple zombies with a single shell. Additionally, reverting to the legacy mechanics resolves visual discrepancies introduced by the overhaul, preventing scenarios in which the undead appear to absorb point-blank shotgun blasts without taking damage.
