Deep Rock Galactic servers offer a way for players to use a consistent shared lobby, with a greater level of control over certain settings. By default, anyone that has the client mod installed can join with the server's IP. This can be changed by creating a server whitelist, which will prevent non-designated players from joining. This is helpful for players who want to keep the server secure for private groups of known players.
